We scoured the Internet this holiday week for you so you didn’t have to!
What we’ve been thinking about this week
- Big Love is now even bigger in Utah, where Judge Robert J. Shelby of United States District Court, ordered Utah to immediately cease enforcement of its laws restricting marriage to a man and a woman
- #NotYourAsianSidekick continues to spark discussion about social media and cultural change.
- Nearly fifteen years after the fact, R. Kelly’s exposure as a sexual predator is prompting a necessary conversation about gender, race, and why we need to listen more effectively to our girls.
- Along with many of you out there, we were deeply saddened to hear news this week of the premature death of writer Ned Vizzini.
What we’ve been reading/listening to this week
- “Shopgirls,” by Katherine Zoepf in The New Yorker, which details women’s inroads into the traditionally male-dominated workforce in Saudi Arabia.
- Thanks to Guernica, we got a second chance to read Arlene Goldbard’s “ The Cultural Commons Lies Hidden in Plain Sight,” which we missed the first time around when it was originally posted at On the Commons.
- In this season of list-making, we’ve been combing this collection at Bitch for our favorite feminist mixtape.
From the TBQ Community
- Blog editor Meredith Turits interviewed Kevin Sampsell over at The Rumpus
- We’re extending our current submissions period until January 15! Send us some holiday love, all you writers, photographers, makers, and badasses.
And for a little holiday cheer from TBQ to you…
We promise that watching Jacki Lyden, Nina Totenberg et. al. rock out will make your season bright.
