This week in news, we had several important and sad moments. World leaders assembled at a football stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa – the only venue that would offer enough seating – to mourn the death and celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela. More than 50 national leaders were flown in, presenting quite a security challenge.

On a lighter note, President Obama captured the moment with, yes folks, a selfie. He snapped a shot on his Blackberry with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and British Prime Minister David Cameron while Michelle Obama looked on, perhaps a bit disapprovingly.

Parents of children who were slain this time last year in Newtown, CT at Sandy Hook Elementary school asked reporters to keep their distance this week so that families could have a peaceful day of mourning. However some parents are reaching out in the form of Sandy Hook Promise, a nonprofit organization that is starting new conversations among parents about the importance of gun control.

Peter O’Toole, who starred in the iconic 1962 film “Lawrence of Arabia,” died today at age 81.
